Video Recording Software

VUSM Video Recording Software

The School of Medicine has multiple software offerings that are capable of video recording that can be used for lectures or pre-recorded presentation material. This document will highlight the two primary options available to you, as well as the features and limitations unique to each. If you have any questions about video recording software, please submit a ticket.

Zoom

Although Zoom is primarily used for hosting meetings, it also allows you to record a meeting (other users do not have to be present). Recording a video within Zoom allows you to record only your webcam, a Powerpoint/other file on your desktop, or both at the same time. You can choose whether the video file is saved on your computer or to your online Zoom account (online account only for licensed users). If you choose to display your webcam, it will display in the top right corner of your presentation. Free Basic accounts that include recording capability are available to everyone, while anyone with a Vanderbilt University email address is able to claim a Licensed VU account that includes additional features. Echo360

Echo360 is software designated for lecture recording. While VUSM has primarily relied on it for recording classrooms, there is a Personal Capture app that can record only your webcam, a Powerpoint/other file on your desktop, or both at the same time. Echo360 is limited to users with an active Vanderbilt University username, and it requires manual account creation. Before downloading the Personal Capture application, you will need to confirm an existing account or request one here. The app is easy to use once installed, and the recorded file will be saved to our online Echo360 library, organized by course. After recording your presentation, you will need to save your file under the name of the VUSM course or user group in the library. You can do this as you save the file, or you can reach out to us afterwards with this information. If you choose to display your webcam, the recording will show the webcam and presentation side-by-side. For more information about setting up and using Echo360, click here.
