Posting and Replying to a Forum in VSTAR Learn

The forum activity allows students and teachers to exchange ideas by posting comments as part of a ‘thread’. Files such as images and media maybe included in forum posts.

Add a New Forum Post

  • Open the Forum
  • Select “Add New Topic” to begin a new discussion.
  • On the following page, fill in the topic subject, message, and anything else
  • Select “Advanced” beneath your message to display the following fields and enable these features
    • Discussion subscription: If enabled, you will receive notifications of new posts to that discussion.
    • Attachments: You can optionally attach one or more files to a forum post
    • Pinned: Pinned discussions will appear at the top of a forum
  • If you would like your Forum to only be displayed for a certain amount of time, you can open the Display Period settings and enter the dates and times to start and end the post’s availability. Otherwise, you can leave this blank.
  • Select “Post to Forum” to save your post

Reply to an existing Forum Post

  • Open the Forum
  • Select the Discussion Topic where you will post your reply
    • Tip: When viewing an individual Discussion, select “Display replies in nested form” in the top left to organize posts by conversation
  • Click the “Reply” button beneath the post you will be replying to
  • Other options beneath each forum post include
    • Permalink: Generates a link directly to that forum post
    • Show parent: Highlights post that the selected post was in response to
    • Edit [available to faculty only]: Allows you to edit your forum post
